The Therapeutic Power of Art: Hosting the “Love of Waves” Workshop – 2026-04-23

Art is not only an object of aesthetic experience; it can also function as a powerful means of care, empowerment and social cohesion.

With great joy and emotion, the Museum of the Greek Diaspora in Kastritsi, Patras, hosted the experiential workshop “Love of Waves”, with the participation of the “Gefyra” Therapeutic Community of the Messolonghi Nursing Unit of the 6th Health Region.

The workshop, centred on the idea “The Wave I Carry / The Journey of Waves”, explored memory, journey, separation and return through bodily expression, movement and the symbolic element of the red thread. Participants moved through the museum space like waves, connected with one another through threads and created a large symbolic wave, highlighting the importance of connection, shared experience and human relationship.

In a space dedicated to the memory of diaspora, journeys, movements and the multiple homelands of people, the action acquired a particularly symbolic meaning. The museum was transformed into a place of care and communication, where art functioned as a bridge between personal experience and collective memory.

This action once again highlighted the importance of collaboration between culture and mental health, offering a safe space where art becomes a bridge of communication, empowerment and meaningful human contact.

Special mention and heartfelt thanks are due to Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Patras, Mr. Panos Alexopoulos, for his ongoing support and valuable contribution to the strengthening of actions that promote mental health through culture, as well as to Ms. Apostolia Pastra, who guided this experiential process with sensitivity, creativity and care.

“Love of Waves” was a meaningful experience of participation and connection. A reminder that, like the waves of the sea, people travel, drift apart, return and always seek a place where they can meet again.
